Learning how to wash dishes by hand should be an easy task, but for many, inefficient habits can occur, so it can be helpful to read up on proper dishwashing techniques.

1. Prepare. Get the dishes ready and put on rubber gloves if you’re trying to give your hands that extra care. Take a good look around the area to make sure you haven’t forgotten a pan sitting on the stove in need of a good clean, or a coffee mug hiding behind the kettle.
2. Scrape away all the left-over food into a recycling bin. There’s no need to put food waste in the same bin as everything else, as you can make compost from it to grow your own food, or use it as a great fertilizer for flowers. Roses especially love left over scraps!
3. Fill the sink with hot water, and add the dishwashing liquid or detergent if you’re washing a big load of dishes. If you’re only washing a few things, create a ‘mini solution’ by putting a small amount of the product in a tupperware box with water.
4. Put in cutlery first, as it can sit at the bottom without interfering with other objects in the sink.
5. Place in any bigger items, or items with tough or greasy stains. Make sure the water is able to soak the entire inside of the items.
6. Start to wash the dishes with the least soiled items. One by one remove them from the hot water, scrub any remaining grease or dirt off the plate, then once you are sure it is clean, rinse with water and place it in a drying rack next to or above the sink.
7. Make sure that you are being logical with where you put the items on the drying rack. Often, running out of space can be a problem, so consider this as an issue. Alternatively, invest in an overhead drying rack in addition to one next to the sink.
8. Carry on working through the dirty items. If the water at any point becomes murky or the suds from the detergent no longer cover the surface completely, drain the water, and refill the sink with hot water and dishwashing liquid, and start again.
9. Once your dishes are clean, make sure you give proper attention to the cutlery as well. Remember that cutlery directly goes into the mouth of your customers!
10. Lastly, wash up your pots, pans, and any other items with a lot of leftover foods stuck on. Make sure you do these last as they will make your entire washing up load dirty if you allow them to mix. Apply dishwashing detergent on your sponge and clean the pots if there is a lot of grease still left!
